What is COMP?

Community of Opportunities Mural Program (COMP) is a free program offered to Residents of TGHA properties. Its purpose is to create works of Public Art to be enjoyed by the residents and the City of Greenville as a whole.

Public art provides a tool for economic revitalization and creates community identity. It helps shape the quality of life for people in a community by offering a form of expression that embodies a community’s spirit. It represents a sense of community pride and brings people together. Moreover, public art attracts people to a community who bring a broad array of talents and experiences, further enriching it.

How did you fund COMP?

On September 28, 2017, TGHA received approval from the City of Greenville’s Arts in Public Places Commission to implement the Community of Opportunities Mural Program. In March of 2018, we applied for and received a grant from the Arts in Public Places Commission in the amount of $9,000 to cover some of the cost of implementation. The remaining program costs are covered by TGHA.

Who came up with the conceptual design for the dumpster enclosure?

The mural concepts for each dumpster enclosure was shaped through design charrettes with former and current residents of the Gallery at West Greenville. Free art classes were held at the Greenville Center for Creative Arts and taught by Adam C. Schrimmer of the Blank Canvas Mural Company. In addition, neighborhood meetings continue to be held with current residents at the Gallery at West Greenville Club House to complete the designs for the two remaining dumpster enclosures on the Gallery at West Greenville's campus.
